Arguably, gamepass would cost more because it's negating your sales entirely, but from what I heard, gamepass has performance bonuses based on how well the game did on their services, so it might be different math. Guess what Microsoft paid to get GoTG on gamepass for example. For every 1m in sales, assuming that's a clean 60-70m dollars without having to pay taxes or other stuff, which is not realistic, but it's just speculation here, you'd make 7.2m with a 12% cut and 8.4m for 70 dollars. Specially since you personally cut the revenue share to make your store more appealing to developers. Epic games store is much more than fortnite now but fortnite definitely helps, no question about it. Public perception can grow and change once you have established a foothold and competition is good regardless of what level it is on. So the fact that Steam hasn't moved is because they themselves have become complacent and because the Epic store isn't a threat to them, yet. It isn't as big as steam in total users or total active users, but what other game store has got even close to steam? That's right, zero.
